Microsoft Claims Project Scorpio Will Have Exclusives, But That Console Generations Are Over

Traditionally, when a company like Sony or Microsoft released a console, you could be pretty sure a replacement wouldn’t arrive for at least another five years. Well that dependable schedule is about to change, as Sony and Microsoft have both announced new “half-step” consoles (the Playstation Neo and Project Scorpio) will arrive within the next year or so.

These machines will deliver 4K resolution and smoother framerates, but both companies have shied away from promising exclusive games for the new consoles. Sony has outright promised the Playstation Neo won’t have exclusives, but Microsoft has been more cagey. In a recent interview, Xbox head of marketing Aaron Greenberg admitted the new machine will have exclusives, sort of. All regular games will still be playable on the original Xbox One, but there will be VR exclusives:

“We’re not going to have console-exclusive games for Project Scorpio. It’s one ecosystem — whether you have an Xbox One S or Project Scorpio, we don’t want anyone to be left behind, Now, with the power and capabilities we have, we’ll be able to do high-fidelity VR. Now, that space, we don’t think of that as console gaming, we think of that as high-fidelity VR, and so with the VR experiences those will be new things that you will only get on Project Scorpio.”

Greenberg also spoke about the “death” of the traditional console generation:

“For us, we think the future is without console generations. We think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We’re basically saying, ‘This isn’t a new generation. Everything you have continues forward and it works.’ We think of this as a family of devices. But we’ll see. We’re going to learn from this, we’re going to see how that goes.”

Certainly a few mixes messages coming out of this interview. Console generations are dead, and going forward everything will be compatible and continue to work — unless you’re into VR, in which case, buy our new box! Microsoft wants to compete with the PC gaming scene without scaring off traditional console gamers, and I’m just not sure it’s going to work. As Greenberg says, we’re going to see how that goes.

Project Scorpio is expected to arrive in the latter half of 2017.

A recent interview with Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s head of Xbox games marketing, indicates that the Xbox One could be the last generation of gaming consoles as we know them today… at least, for Microsoft.

Let’s back up for a second. Several years ago, there was talk in the gaming industry that another market crash would be imminent if a new console generation wasn’t unleashed in the immediate future. This fear stemmed from Apple’s launch of the original iPhone and the introduction of cheap gaming apps. This move disrupted the expected evolution of gaming to full-blown, downloadable digital content, and was fueled by the introduction of cloud-based games on social networks such as Farmville.

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles hit the scene in 2013 and brought balance back to the Force. However, with gamers now eating up digital content and streaming their favorite console titles to desktops and laptops, there’s a question as to what the next generation will bring.

Microsoft is tirelessly working to thin the line between console and PC with Windows 10, and is even offering a “buy-it-once-play-on-both” Xbox Play Anywhere scheme for many PC/Xbox games. And part of thinning that line is a re-imagining how how console updates should work.

“For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio,” Greenberg told Engadget. “We’re basically saying, ‘This isn’t a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.’ We think of this as a family of devices.”

He said there’s currently a lot of interest in Project Scorpio, and believes that it will change the way everyone thinks about the future of Xbox gaming. Microsoft also believes Project Scorpio will be a huge success when it arrives during 2017’s holiday season. It’s billed as the “most powerful console ever,” a device that “has no boundaries” for developers to create the ultimate gaming experience.

When Microsoft first introduced Project Scorpio, the company said that it wouldn’t leave the original Xbox One console in the dust. “Every single thing we’ve done for Xbox One will continue to work,” the company said.

The project officially appeared after rumors surfaced that a future Xbox console would be upgradable like a desktop. But as seen with the new Xbox One S and the upcoming Project Scorpio release, Microsoft is seemingly gearing up to unleash consoles the same way OEMs refresh laptop models. The good news is that games and accessories purchased for the Xbox One will work on the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio’s hardware, eliminating the backwards-compatibility bottleneck Microsoft is currently facing with Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One consoles.

It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out. While we know Microsoft plans to update Xbox One with Project Scorpio, we don’t know what the plan is after that. Will a new version appear every three years? Two years? Every year? We’ll just have to wait and see.

PS4-Neo-Thumbnal-blue

by Will Nicol via Yahoo! Tech

It hasn’t even been three years since Sony released the PlayStation 4, yet both Sony and Microsoft have more powerful consoles in the works. After the seven-year life span of the PS3, a new PlayStation may seem sudden, but Sony’s new console isn’t an entirely new device. Instead, Sony will launch the PlayStation 4 “Neo,” an upgraded version of the current console that features more powerful components.

Why iterate on the PS4? Technology moves fast, and consoles quickly become outdated in terms of performance and graphical power as PC hardware continues to advance. By updating console technology over the course of a generation, Sony — and Microsoft with its recently announced Project Scorpio — can provide console users with gaming experiences that won’t lag too far behind those on PCs. In a way, console manufacturers are simply following the model set by other devices, namely smartphones, improving on hardware rather than trying to reinvent the wheel with a each generation.

Although Sony has yet to formally reveal its console, leaks and rumors have flooded the internet for months. Here are some of the bigger rumors and leaks about the new PS4, some substantiated by Sony, some not.

Name and specs

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House confirmed reports that Sony will launch an upgraded version of the PlayStation 4, which Sony internally referred to as “Neo,” in June, 2016. In an interview with the Financial Times, House suggested the new “high-end” PS4 would support 4K resolution.

PlayStation-Neo

The PlayStation Neo codename and the console’s specs were initially reported in April, 2016 by Giant Bomb, based on documents outlining Sony’s plans for the console. According to the report, the Neo’s CPU will apparently have a faster clock speed, running at 2.1GHz  — up from the current model’s 1.6GHz — and a more advanced AMD GPU with 36 compute units (CUs) running at 911MHz, up from 18 CUs running at 800MHz. The Neo may also have an increased memory bandwidth of 218GB/s. A 42-page report about Sony’s roadmap for the Neo with the same specs, rumored to be the report Giant Bomb cited, leaked to the public in July, 2016.

These hardware improvements would allow for better performance and graphical fidelity. In particular, The Neo can support 4K resolution and virtual reality, which is fitting given that Sony is producing both 4K televisions and the PlayStation VR headset. For those unsure what 4K means, when it comes to televisions, 4K refers to pixel resolutions of 3,840 × 2,160, which offers four times as many pixels as a typical 1080p display.

Giant Bomb’s sources indicated that, although Sony is not mandating that developers support 4K, Neo versions of games must have frame rates that meet or surpass the current frame rates on the current PS4.

The advent of virtual reality seems like a good reason for designing a better PlayStation. Although PlayStation VR will be compatible with the current model PS4, virtual reality is incredibly taxing on even high-end PCs. If Sony wants to offer a competitive VR experience, Neo’s more powerful hardware is a rational step.

PS4 and Neo will coexist

When owners of the current PS4 hear about the Neo, they may worry that they will need to buy the new model in order to play the latest games. Speaking to the Financial Times, Sony Interactive CEO Andrew House assured audiences that all PS4 games released in the future will run on the current PS4 model. This is in line with the Giant Bomb report, which asserted that not only will all PS4 games be compatible on both models, but that Sony plans to prohibit developers from designing features, modes, or unlockables exclusively for the more powerful hardware. Moreover, multiplayer modes cannot separate users on regular the PS4 and Neo.

According to the Giant Bomb report, PS4 games released from October onward will be required to make games ship with two discrete optimizations; one for the standard PS4 and another for the “Neo.”Developers can also patch older games to support the Neo hardware, if they wish to do so.

In an interview with German site Gameswelt, President of Sony’s World Studios Shuhei Yoshida said the release of Neo will not shorten the PS4’s life cycle in any way. Given the seven years between the release of the PS3 and PS4, this would indicate that Sony intends to stick with the current generation for a while.

When will Sony release the Neo? How much will it cost?

Following Rumors that Sony might unveil PlayStation Neo in September, Sony has invited members of the press to an unspecified “PlayStation Meeting” on September 7. The presentation, held at the PlayStation Theater in New York and will reportedly cover the “future of PlayStation.” While the invitations make no mention of the Neo, nor any other specific products, the general consensus given the rumors and expectations seems to be that Sony would be showing off the console at the event.

As mentioned by Kotaku’s Patrick Klepek on his Twitter account, developers are apparently disgruntled about how quickly they’ve been forced to adapt to the new requirements, lending credence to rumors that the console will actually launch this fall.

If Sony is indeed waiting until it has a good array of games to showcase, it’s possible that Neo may launch this holiday season, using October’s releases to show off the console’s power.

The PlayStation 4 Neo does not have an official release date or price. However, a product post on Amazon.com’s Spanish-language storefront leaked early. It indicated a price of 400 euros — about $450 U.S. The original PS4 retailed for 400 Euros in Europe $400 in North America at launch. The listing said the Neo would launch October 13, the same day as Sony’s PlayStation VR headset.

Suicide Squad opened last weekend, breaking records for an August release, but at least one guy and his brother (who is a lawyer) are so mad about the movie they intend to sue. Their complaint comes down to noted edgelord Jared Leto being barely in the film despite all the deleted scenes used for the trailers. Using deleted scenes to spice up a trailer is nothing new, although some movies like Fantastic Four have come under fire for the practice. And now — if Redditor “BlackPanther2016” isn’t just an elaborate ruse — this trailer practice may earn a silly lawsuit for “false advertising” in the U.K. court system.

This guy claims his case has already been accepted by the court and goes forward this Thursday. “My brother (who is a lawyer) and I are going to sue WB and DC for false advertising, misleading visual images and gaining a profit from us and millions others due to these acts,” he claims. Then he goes on a rant in which he claims he had to drive 300 miles [Not kilometers? Hmmm…] to London from Scotland to see the movie and that the employees of the theater laughed at him (causing “trauma”) when he asked for a refund. Oh, you sweet baby angel.

Here’s the full long-winded thing, which we hope is a joke but fear may not be:

Movie Trailers are like food menus, they give you a preview of what your gonna get. If you look at a McDonald’s menu and you choose to get your favourite burger, presented/showcased in a nice picture with pickles, chicken, mild cheese(you’re favourite, in-fact…that’s the only reason you’re getting this burger…because you love mild cheese). So you use your hard worked money to pay for this burger, you get the burger, but only to find out that…this isn’t the burger you ordered. Yes it has pickles and chicken…but…it doesn’t have mild cheese…it has regular cheese.

Suicide Squad trailers showcased several SPECIFIC Joker scenes that I had to pay for the whole movie just so that I can go watch those SPECIFIC SCENES that WB/DC had advertised in their trailers and TV spots. These scenes are: When Joker banged his head on his car window, when Joker says, ”let me show you my toys”, when Joker punchs the roof of his car, when Joker drops a bomb with his face all messed up and says, ”BYE BYE!”. Non of these scenes were in the movie. I drove 300 miles to London to go watch these specific scenes they had explicitly advertised in their TV ads…and they didn’t show them to me. Adding to this, they were also 2 specific Katana scenes they advertised that were also the reason I wanted to go watch the movie. These scenes were: Katana’s eyes going black, and a slow motion shot of her and her sword taking souls…in a smokey kind of style. These scenes were advertised several times in the 1st trailer and many TV ads…but they didn’t show it to me in the movie. I wasted alot of money paying and travelling to go watch this movie because of these specific scenes they had advertised to me and all of us saying, ”hey, check out our preview! this will all be in our movie, come watch it on the 5th!!”. All lies. I told the theatre about this unjust act and said I didn’t get what I came here to see…can I have my money back. They laughed at me and kicked me out. So I’m now taking this to court. I want my refund, the trauma of being embarrassed as I was being kicked out and people laughing at me for wanting my refund, and also the 160 pounds of fuel money I used to drive to London from Scotland.

If you advertise something…give me what you have advertised. Period. This is becoming a habbit with movie studios, showing epic scenes in trailers…but their never shown in the movies. It’s unjust.

I just want to say, join me if you feel the same way. Let’s stop this nonsense of false bullsh*tery…and don’t let them bribe you with their ”deluxe premium special directors gold extended edition supreme cut” nonsense. You should get what they advertised as their first theatre showing and what you have paid for based on what they have showed you in their advertisements.

Our court process will begin on 11/08/16 this week.

Instead of going out to complain he should have stuck around for all that free popcorn. Also should have learned the difference between “your” and “you’re”. Oh no, am I going to get sued for causing him trauma by saying that? (Why so serious?)

Let’s take everyone who wants to sue over not enjoying the movie and have them brawl with anyone who earnestly signed the petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes over bad Suicide Squad reviews. Perhaps we could bet on our favorite side and call them some sort of, I don’t know, kamikaze squad?

Microsoft is cultivating a behind-the-scenes slate of games for Project Scorpio, its upcoming Xbox One console upgrade, Xbox division head Phil Spencer confirmed this week.

Responding to a Twitter question regarding whether developers are working on Project Scorpio-compatible games, Spencer claimed that development teams are currently tackling Project Scorpio “hardware, platform and games” ahead of the upgrade’s planned 2017 launch.

Microsoft previously announced Project Scorpio at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, noting that the Xbox One successor will feature eight CPU cores and a six teraflop GPU. The hardware represents a significant upgrade compared to existing Xbox One and Xbox One S consoles, and will be capable of pushing more than 320 gigabytes of memory bandwidth per second.

Microsoft emphasized that Project Scorpio will not replace current Xbox One models, but will instead coexist alongside legacy hardware, with support for all previously released Xbox One games, controllers, and accessories. Games designed for Project Scorpio will feature improved performance, along with support for 4K resolutions.

Project Scorpio will also pave the way for “high-fidelity VR” on Xbox One, according to Microsoft. Insider sources hinted that Microsoft is pursuing a partnership with VR headset maker Oculus in order to introduce Oculus Rift support for the Xbox One.

Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox games marketing, confirmed that Project Scorpio will not host any exclusives, however, suggesting that future Xbox One games must feature compatibility with all console models.

A similar upgrade for Sony’s PlayStation 4, code-named “Neo,” also binds developers to existing PlayStation 4 hardware. While PlayStation 4 games may offer increased frame rates and other technical improvements when powered by PlayStation Neo, leaked documents reveal that Sony prohibits developers from making Neo-specific games or introducing major gameplay features that require the hardware upgrade.

Microsoft targets a holiday 2017 launch for Project Scorpio.

SteamVR, the tracking technology that powers the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, will soon be available to device manufacturers royalty-free.

The move is intended boost the number of VR peripherals and other input devices compatible with the Vive, SteamVR maker Valve said this week.

At this early stage in VR development, with just three mainstream high-end headsets—PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, in addition to the Vive—making it cheaper for third-party manufacturers to support the SteamVR platform could give Valve and HTC a competitive edge.

“It’s critical to the future of the virtual reality ecosystem to open up the tracking technology to support the growth of a healthy portfolio of products that work together with HTC Vive,” HTC Vice President Raymond Pao said in a statement. “This is an amazing way to compliment the HTC Vive and spur further innovation in VR.”

Third-party manufacturers still need to pay nearly $3,000 to attend a training course in order to use SteamVR tracking technology in their own devices. But the elimination of royalties and licensing fees will mean a significantly lower cash outlay for most.

To help increase adoption, HTC said it plans to hold training courses for manufacturers in Asia, in addition to the Valve-hosted courses in Seattle.

Each SteamVR licensee will get a hardware development kit including a reference tracking device, sensors, and software tools to help design and build new devices.

Efficient tracking technology is crucial to VR’s development, especially as a way to reduce headsets’ massive demands on CPUs. Companies like Nvidia are evaluating techniques to decrease the field of view that needs to be rendered by focusing on where the user’s eye is looking. That requires extremely responsive tracking.

screen-shot-2016-08-01-at-21-10-47-720x720

by Luke Dormehl via Digital Trends

As the worlds we explore using VR get larger, one potentially limiting factor is the question of how to best simulate wide open spaces in virtual reality if the real world locations users are present in don’t provide adequate room. After all, it’s a relaxing thought to consider that we might put on our HTC Vive headset after work and take a stroll down a long stretch of deserted beach — but a bit impractical if we happen to live in a small apartment.

A group of researchers think they may be on to a solution, however, and they showed it off at last week’s SIGGRAPH conference. Developed by researchers at the Tokyo and Unity Technologies Japan, the project calls for a new type of “Visuo-Haptic” VR experience, which reportedly creates the illusion of an infinite virtual corridor in a “play space” measuring just 16 feet by 22 feet.

Called “redirected walking,” the technology basically tricks the subject’s brain into thinking that he or she is walking in a straight line when, in fact, the subject is walking on a slight curve. Extrapolate that slight curve into a full circle and it essentially creates a limitless play space in which someone could walk forever without hitting a wall — or realizing they’re walking in circles.

“This work uses the ‘Visuo-haptic redirected walking’ [concept], which is a novel efficient redirected working technique by utilizing haptic cues for strongly modifying our spatial perception,” Takuji Narumi, one of the researchers on the project, tells Digital Trends. “Since the combination of visual and haptic sensations strongly alters our spatial perception in agreement with visual representation, the system effectively reduces the required space for infinite walking.”

Narumi says that the researchers are already speaking with several companies about the technology, and that he could see it working well in a “theme park or amusement attraction” setting. While the technology currently requires users to touch a wall to guide themselves and enhance the effect, he also hopes that long term this can be done away with.

“We can demonstrate haptic cues enhances the effect of the redirected walking technique,” he says. “[But] for actual usage, using the static wall is a limitation of our method. We would like to investigate the effect of ‘active’ haptic cues provided by some kind of haptic interfaces. By doing so, we may eliminate walls from the proposed method by presenting haptic sensations with haptic interfaces, and extend applicability of our method.”

tegra-x1-header.0.0

by Arthur Gies via Polygon

You should take expectations of a Nintendo console with the power of Sony’s current PlayStation 4 or even Microsoft’s Xbox One and let them go now, in all likelihood.

Earlier today, Eurogamer published a report citing multiple sources that states the new Nintendo console — codenamed NX and due to launch next March according to Nintendo representatives — will be a hybrid solution bridging the gap between mobile game platforms and dedicated home gaming consoles. The bulk of the device is a tablet-like system that bears a passing resemblance to the Wii U Gamepad controller, with a screen flanked on either side by conventional controller inputs. However, these inputs can detach and be used independently by up to two users for multiplayer-oriented games.

The NX portable element is joined by a docking station which connects to HDTVs. Eurogamer’s report is unclear as to what other hardware the dock may provide.

According to a companion piece published by Eurogamer’s gaming technology-oriented Digital Foundry blog, the NX development hardware is using a version of GPU manufacturer Nvidia’s Tegra X1 chip, which also powers Nvidia’s Shield set-top box.

This is where things get murkier.

The Nvidia Shield box is a small set top box using a “passively cooled” X1 chipset, which means that stable, generally non-moving bits of hardware direct heat generated from the processor away from it. Digital Foundry’s article stresses that the X1 chipset in the NX development box is actively-cooled, however, which suggests that the hardware in the dev kit is running at a faster configuration than existing products using that hardware.

Active cooling isn’t particularly feasible in a mobile device, however, so it seems likely that the Tegra hardware inside of the NX is more advanced and more powerful than the existing X1. Conversely, perhaps the dock element of the NX provides cooling for the tablet’s Tegra system-on-a-chip, which, along with a move from battery power to a dedicated power supply, could allow for higher performance in “console” mode.

Unfortunately, for fans looking for a new Nintendo console that’s “competitive” with the presentation capabilities of the PS4 or Xbox One, there’s not much to be excited for here. The Tegra X1 debuted in March 2015 with promises of PS3/Xbox 360 equivalent graphics, systems which were ten and nine years old at that time, respectively, and even then, this promise proved somewhat unsubstantiated. As Digital Foundry notes, Doom 3 BFG was natively ported to the Shield platform, and ran at 1080p and 60 frames per second in comparison to the 720p30 presentation on last-generation consoles. However, close comparisons suggested a significantly lower level of model complexity, normal and shadow maps, and texture resolution on the Nvidia hardware by comparison.

Put more simply, Doom 3 BFG ran faster and in higher resolution on Tegra, but it looks a lot worse in every other regard. Call it a wash, I suppose.

As Digital Foundry also points out, Nintendo’s new console doesn’t appear to be running Android, meaning developers on NX will likely be able to secure performance increases and better looking games than Tegra has previously provided. And if the NX is using the next generation of Tegra mobile chipsets, which are due to be announced in August at the annual Hot Chips conference, we could see even more performance improvements. The existing Tegra chip uses a GPU derived from the same family as Nvidia’s 900 series of video cards, whereas the next generation is expected to move to the hardware driving Nvidia’s recent 1080, 1070 and 1060 GPUs. These graphics cards are much more power efficient than their predecessors and more powerful to boot, suggesting the evolution in architecture might also help Nintendo get more out of Tegra.

While Tegra’s specifications are competitive with more modern hardware, its roots as a mobile chipset — designed for small form factor devices powered by batteries, rather than the power supplies in consoles and PCs — makes direct comparisons difficult, and not encouraging. The laws of physics make it hard for devices designed to run on batteries that will fit in a small form factor device — like a tablet, for example — output performance on par with devices that don’t have that constraint. A “faster” processor in a mobile device will have difficulty competing with a “slower” box plugged into your wall. Even if the NX’s dock provides a power boost for the system’s SoC, it’s unlikely to boost it to anything remotely resembling the PS4 or the Xbox One. So it’s time to come to terms with that — and, potentially, to get excited for another new, different thing from Nintendo.

sega-mini-genesis

by Jacob Siegal via BGR News

Not to be outdone by Nintendo’s reveal of the NES Classic Edition earlier this month, Sega and AtGames announced two new retro consoles this week with 80 games built in in celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary.

First up we have the Genesis Classic Game Console, a device which you’ve likely seen on store shelves in years past. AtGames has been at the forefront of the nostalgia-fueled retro console business for quite some time, so this is really just the 2016 edition of the Classic Game Console with a few new games included.

One of the most significant differences between AtGames’ mini Genesis and Nintendo’s mini NES is that the Genesis actually plays original Genesis cartridges. If you have any old Sega games lying around, you can slot them in and start playing. The Sega console also comes with two wireless controllers, but supports classic Genesis controllers as well (if you want to go really retro).

sega-genesis-portableUnfortunately, the mini Genesis doesn’t support HDMI output, but if you don’t want to play on your TV, you can pick up the Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player instead. This 3.2-inch handheld console features the same 80 games, but also has an SD card slot in case you want to add more.

Both the mini Genesis and the portable Genesis will be available in October for around $65. They might not be as polished as the NES Classic Edition, but if you prefer quantity over quality, they’re worth checking out.

Here is the complete list of 80 games that come built-in:

Ghost-Recon-Wildlands_cliffside-view_E3-2016-930x523

Four U.S. soldiers against the army of a notorious drug cartel doesn’t sound like a fair battle. But Ghost Recon players have been in dire situations before.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands (heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC next year on March 7) is the latest installment in the long-running tactical shooter franchise. This time around, the action takes place in Bolivia, which publisher Ubisoft says is the biggest open-world it has ever made. These massive games (including Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs) are an important part of the French company’s success in the $99.6 billion game industry.

In Ghost Recon: Wildlands, the Santa Blanca cartel has taken over Bolivia’s cocaine supply. Santa Blanca’s leader is the brutish El Sueño, and it’s up to the four Ghost operatives to take him down and dismantle his empire from the inside.

I wasn’t impressed with Wildlands at all when I first saw it last summer. I watched a presentation that was so dramatic that I couldn’t take it seriously. At the end of it, I still wasn’t sure why Wildlands needed an open world. But after playing it at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show with three other players, I can see why developer Ubisoft Paris is so bullish about it.

According to senior producer Nouredine Abboud, Wildlands is the culmination of four years of work that began shortly after the release of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier in 2012.

“And at the end of Future Soldier, the big answer [of what to do next] was to have a large playground. In this large playground, you can actually choose everything: you choose the location, the time of day, the weapons, etc.,” said Abboud in an interview with GamesBeat. “As opposed to games that have smaller maps where you have limitations … . Being in this big map, it’s exactly like the soldiers on the battleground [in real life].”

“We needed this big map because we wanted the player to be able to play depending on their play style,” added creative director Eric Couzian.

Adapting with your teammates

Wildlands has more than 100 story missions, and you can tackle them (with up to three online friends or with computer-controlled teammates) in any order you want. Everything you do — like interrogating cartel leaders or disrupting their supply chains — will bring you closer to El Sueño.

Unlike past Ghost Recon games, the designers haven’t scripting anything. Couzian told me the A.I. is “completely autonomous,” and enemies will behave differently depending on the time of day, the weather, and the ecosystem (you’ll fight in jungles, deserts, mountains, and more).

In the demo, it was a sunny day as my team embarked on a mission to capture a Santa Blanca lieutenant. After using our drones to scout the small compound from above and mark the enemies on our screens, we tried to take out as many people as we could with our sniper rifles. But our main target freaked out and ran away — Couzian later told me that guy is a coward, so he’ll always try to escape if he thinks he’s in danger. The lieutenant hopped in a car and drove away as my team scrambled down the hill on foot to chase him.

We grabbed a few vacant cars on the road and cornered the target at a nearby gas station, where he had reinforcements waiting for us. In the end, my team interrogated him for intel. But if we had been more careful in the beginning, we could’ve avoided the chase altogether and grabbed the guy in the compound.

“It’s also why the open world is so interesting,” said Couzian. “We don’t know where the action can lead you because the A.I. will escape and grab a car and then it’s up to you to decide how to chase him.”

For our next mission, we headed to the Rosario prison village to gather more information about a local cartel boss. A helicopter was next to the gas station, so we used it to get to Rosario quickly. In the full game, however, grabbing a chopper won’t be that easy; the developers placed it there for the demo. You can’t just summon a vehicle whenever you need it. Instead, you’ll have to find areas in Bolivia where the enemy keeps their helicopters (along with the 59 other types of vehicles you might want) and steal them.

At the village, the four of us split into smaller two-man teams: one to take care of the snipers, and the other to destroy the mortars. As it turns out, drug cartels don’t like it when you blow up their stuff. My partner and I killed a few stragglers as we carved a path to our objective. After downloading files from a PC, we all jumped into a jeep and drove away.

Part of Ghost Recon’s DNA

While the demo was fun, I hope Wildlands isn’t just about killing my way through a third-world country. It’d be a waste to build such a huge chunk of land solely for fighting. I want to explore and talk to the civilians and find out about their lives, too. One of my favorite things to do in Assassin’s Creed’s historic cities is to just walk around and see the sights without worrying about who I’m murdering next. Even The Division, another huge Ubisoft-made shooter, has that to some extent.

Either way, it was just a matter of time before Ghost Recon morphed into an open-world game. Both Abboud and Couzian have been working on the series for over a decade, so they’ve made significant changes to the series before. They said a Ghost Recon game has to have three things: tactical combat, reconnaissance gameplay, and the social experience of playing with your friends. For the Ubisoft Paris team, Wildlands is the next big step in that formula.

“We can clearly say that if the initial Ghost Recon team had access to the tools we have right now, they probably would have done what we’re doing,” said Abboud.  “They would have gone open world because that’s really in the DNA of Ghost Recon.”
