Red Dead Redemption is the next game to join the Xbox One backward compatibility library, publisher Rockstar Games announced. Owners of the Western-based action title on Xbox 360 will be able to play it on their Xbox Ones this Friday, July 8.

“Starting on Friday, every Red Dead Redemption Xbox 360 owner will be able to play the game directly on their Xbox One, regardless of which version of the game they own (Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare and Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition),” the studio said.

Those who don’t currently own any version of the game on disc will be able to purchase a digital download of Red Dead Redemption from the Xbox Games Store this Friday.

Fans have clamored for the title since backward compatibility was first announced in June 2015. A glitch briefly made the Xbox 360 game playable on Microsoft’s newer hardware earlier this year. Microsoft later apologized for the episode, explaining that the brief window of playability was due to an emulation test.

Microsoft’s upcoming Project Scorpio console is four and a half time times as powerful as the existing Xbox One. That’s according to Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer, who made the comment as part of GamesSpot sister site Giant Bomb’s E3 show last night.

“Scorpio is more powerful than the original Xbox One, four and a half times. And the six teraflops will impact the games and how they play,” he explained.

Also in the interview, Spencer talked about how Scorpio will make some existing games, ones that use dynamic scaling, run better than their Xbox One counterparts. As announced previously, Scorpio will play all existing Xbox One games, though it is possible there will be some Scorpio-only games.

Also in the interview, Spencer mentioned that Microsoft considered releasing a new, more powerful Xbox One this year. However, Microsoft abandoned the idea because the company thought it would be better to wait until it was sure it could deliver a box with six teraflops. The Scorpio goes on sale in holiday 2017, though a price has not yet been announced.

Microsoft will release the Xbox One S in August, and while it will offer HDR and 4K for TVs that support it, Spencer said you shouldn’t expect the system to run your existing games better.

“If you already have an Xbox One, don’t go buy an Xbox One S thinking your games are going to play better. If you like the design or if you want the 4K streaming great. HDR? Great. But I’m not trying to upgrade you there,” he explained.

Word has been spreading rapidly that the next PlayStation console called the “Neo” will be releasing this year. The home console will supposedly be designed to take advantage of 4K gaming and virtual reality support for the upcoming PlayStation VR, and it’s rumored to be out this November.

Gamespot picked up the news from Eurogamer, where Digital Foundry’s engineering expert, Richard Leadbetter, did a detailed report on the state of the PlayStation Neo and Xbox Scorpio, making some very cogent points about the race for 4K and the hardware limitations that come with it. Leadbetter rounded out the piece writing.

Several sources have indicated to me that PlayStation Neo launches this year, despite its E3 no-show. If that is the case, it’ll be interesting to see how developers utilise its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus.

Pointing to a late 2016 release for the launch of the PlayStation Neo is an interesting tidbit of information that’s bound to light up the internet.

However, anyone who has been following the trends of 4K benchmarking knows that the specs for the PlayStation Neo and Xbox Scorpio just don’t come close enough to run AAA games on max settings at 4K. The Eurogamer article from Leadbetter says as much. What Leadbetter does point out is that, instead of gunning for 4K, the Scorpio and Neo could be used to make bigger and better games at 1080p and 60fps, which would be the more ideal solution.

4K is still a niche enthusiast pursuit, and Sony and Microsoft gunning for that benchmark would be like going from a production Sedan to a Ferrari, completely skipping over the town car.

More realistically, if what Leadbetter was told about the PlayStation Neo launching this November globally is true, then Sony is basically banking on the system being a supplement for their PlayStation VR endeavors as opposed to ushering in 4K gaming on home consoles. As we previously reported, there were multiple reports of people getting sick and suffering from simulator nausea from the Resident Evil 7 demo due to frame drops and a lack of consistency with the supposed 60 frames per second standard.

Sony would absolutely need to get the PlayStation Neo out as soon as possible to protect the image of the PlayStation VR, especially if the reports are true that the PS4 is struggling to run VR titles at 60fps.

The real question of course is how much the PlayStation Neo will cost? The Eurogamer article doesn’t say and Sony skipped on unveiling the console at their press conference during this year’s E3 festivities. Some are expecting Sony to use GamesCom in Cologne, Germany or the Tokyo Game Show in Tokyo, Japan to announce the PlayStation Neo, which would include pricing details and a more narrowed down release date. It’s also been suggested that Sony might unveil the PS Neo at a special event dedicated entirely to the new console, similar to what they did when they announced the PlayStation 4.

We’ll have to wait and see how this all turns out and if Sony will stick with releasing the PlayStation Neo this fall. The fact that they delayed the announcement of the console during this year’s E3 after Microsoft doubled down and unveiled the Xbox Scorpio, doesn’t bode entirely well for how confident they are in the product. However, if it’s enough to get their VR endeavors off the ground then it may be enough… for now.

You can pick up Sony’s electro-blue-lit PlayStation VR headset on October 13, the company revealed during its E3 presser, after prefacing the date drop with a trailer for the next Resident Evil. At $399, the new PlayStation 4-exclusive headset clocks in $200 cheaper than the next most expensive mainstream virtual reality headset (the Oculus Rift, at $599).

Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Shawn Layden says you can expect 50 games in all for PlayStation VR between launch and year’s end, including a mix of existing and completely new experiences. In a demo reel, the company teased support for a slew of games, including Resident Evil VII (simultaneously outed and dated for January 24, 2017), Final Fantasy XV, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and a new Rocksteady-developed Batman VR game.

There’ll even be a Star Wars riff on the Battlefront shooter-verse, dubbed “Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR Missions.” Think wraparound X-Wing dogfighting (as if the “Star Wars VR” weren’t enough).

We weren’t sure we’d see it at Microsoft’s E3 presser, but the company’s “one more thing” turns out to be the long-rumored Project Scorpio. It’s officially the next Xbox, and it sounds like a beast. Call it Microsoft’s mic drop to Sony, whose PlayStation conference airs later tonight.

Xbox honcho Phil Spencer dropped the bomb as the show closed, teasing a console with 8 CPU cores, 320 GB per second of memory bandwidth and 6 teraflops of GPU power. By contrast, the PlayStation 4 boasts 1.84 teraflops, while the Xbox One has just 1.31. Industry bigwigs quoted in the reel called it “The most powerful graphics processor in a game console to date,” “The highest quality [uncompressed] pixels anyone’s seen” and “The ‘We heard you console.’”

Calling it a “monster,” Spencer says it’s meant to facilitate true 4K resolution gaming, high-fidelity virtual reality, and reassured that all future games will play on all three Xbox consoles. The company announced the Xbox One S, a slimline version of the original Xbox One earlier in the show.

Looks for it next year, and Spencer said Microsoft announced it today “to give developers and partners time to take advantage of the capability now.”

In less than 24 hours, Microsoft will host its E3 press conference. The software maker is expected to launch a smaller, slimmer version of the Xbox One, and a fresh leak on the NeoGAF Forums today is providing our first look at the new console. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans had previously told us that the new Xbox One “Slim” would be 40 percent smaller, and the leaked image appears to show a smaller Xbox One in white.

Alongside the image of the console, some specifications are also listed. Microsoft appears to be introducing a 2TB version of the Xbox One S, with support for 4K video playback, and High Dynamic Range (HDR). The image also notes a new “vertical stand” and “streamlined controller,” so the new Xbox One S won’t need to sit horizontally anymore. Ekim, another poster at NeoGAF has also revealed exactly what the vertical Xbox One S looks like thanks to another leaked image. Ekim also claims the power supply for the Xbox One S is built-in, a first for a recent Xbox console. There’s no details on the “streamlined controller,” but the leaked images simply show a refreshed white version. We’re expecting to hear a lot more about the Xbox One S at Microsoft’s press conference tomorrow.

by Matt Peckham via Time

President and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Andrew House told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” will also be more expensive than the company’s current $350 offering. The PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013 at $400.

The revelation comes after months of rumors that Sony was working on a more powerful console, intended to offer better graphics as well as support for 4K televisions. In a rare, rumor-to-actuality convergence, House confirmed the console is indeed nicknamed “Neo.” He said it is aimed at enthusiast gamers or anyone looking to consume 4K content.

Both the current and new versions are intended to exist in tandem, said House, with the extra development expense for software developers being “small but manageable.” Both versions will support the forthcoming PlayStation VR headset, due this October. House said the company expects to sell both consoles “through the life cycle.”

House assured the Times interoperability wouldn’t be an issue. “All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” said House. If 4K support or visual upgrades aren’t of interest, Sony is saying existing PlayStation 4 owners won’t miss out, software-wise.

Why not show Neo off at the sprawling E3 game show in Los Angeles next week? House said it’s because Sony wants “to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety.” It’s also possible the company’s saving a formal unveiling for Europe’s analogous game show, Gamescom, in mid-August.

no_man_s_sky_141327

by Ryan Winslett via CinemaBlend

The PlayStation 4 and PC gaming worlds join in mourning this weekend as it is officially confirmed that No Man’s Sky has been delayed. Fear not, though, would-be space travelers, as you won’t be asked to wait too much longer before finally diving into the great unknown.

Originally set to launch on June 21, it was announced this weekend that No Man’s Sky is officially being delayed by about seven weeks, not hitting store shelves both physical and virtual until Aug. 9. That’s the North American launch date, with Europe set to go on Aug. 10 and the UK getting its hands on No Man’s Sky on Aug. 12.

It’s been a long road to launch for folks who have been anticipating No Man’s Sky since it was originally shown off a couple of years ago at E3. Hello Games’ Sean Murray was marched out onto the Sony press conference stage to share his vision, a game with unprecedented scale geared at players with a hunger for exploration and adventure. More impressive was the fact that his indie studio, Hello Games, was literally creating a game with a living, breathing galaxy within it.

Flash forward 12 months to E3 2015 and Sean Murray was back on the E3 stage, announcing that No Man’s Sky was on track for a launch on PlayStation 4 and PC. A bit later we finally got an initial launch date, which was set at June 21.

According to Sean Murray, and pretty much confirmed by the fact that the delay isn’t all that long, the game is basically complete. He said that, with final deadlines approaching, though, the team realized there were some key moments that needed “extra polish” to bring them up to snuff.

The game really has come together, and it’s such an incredible relief. As we sit and play it now, and as I watch playtesters every day, I can finally let myself get excited. We’re actually doing this.

Since this game has been such a big title for Sony these past couple of years, we fully expect to see it at E3 in a couple of weeks, once again wowing the audience as even more gameplay elements are revealed. We’ve got our fingers crossed that it’ll be playable for visitors, too.

As Sean Murray points out, the universe in No Man’s Sky is basically unfathomable and aims to achieve things that no other video game has managed. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to get it right and taking the time to do so. He goes on to thank the community for its patience and reminds readers that, with only one shot to get No Man’s Sky right, “we can’t mess it up.”

Perusing some of the comments, it sounds like the community agrees. Personally, I pretty much planned on making No Man’s Sky my whole-damn-summer game, but I’d rather it be right than right now, so I’m happy to wait.

xbox-one-slim

by Tom Warren via The Verge

While Microsoft is rumored to be planning two new “Xbox TV” streaming devices at E3, it appears a slimmer and smaller Xbox One will be unveiled too. References to a new Xbox One wireless chip were discovered last month, and now Kotaku claims Microsoft will release a “cheaper, small Xbox One” later this year. The updated Xbox One is rumored to include a larger 2TB hard drive. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans tell The Verge that the refreshed Xbox One will be 40 percent smaller than the current model, and will likely include 4K video support.

Microsoft is also reportedly planning a larger update to the Xbox One next year. Codenamed Scorpio, Kotaku claims the new console will have a more powerful GPU to support 4K gaming, and that “it will also be technically capable of supporting the Oculus Rift.” Microsoft is reportedly pursuing a partnership with Oculus, but the details seem vague and it’s not clear if this will mean native support of Oculus Rift on the new Xbox One or the previously announced game streaming to the VR headset.

Microsoft’s new consoles are part of what’s described as “Project Helix,” to converge Xbox and Windows 10 gaming. Microsoft is expected to talk more about part of its efforts towards this at E3 next month, and announce the smaller Xbox One console. The Verge will be covering Microsoft’s E3 event live at 12:30PM ET / 9:30AM PT on June 13th.

nintendo-nx-rumors

by ‘Apolon’ via ‘iDigitalTimes’

As reported by Nintendolife, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima recently spoke to Nintendo investors at one of the company’s periodic briefings and they grilled him pretty hard once he announced that the Nintendo NX and Zelda Wii U were both missing the holiday season this year. But he had an explanation (translation by Cheesemeister3k, again via Nintendolife): “Having a full software lineup when the hardware launches is one reason for the NX launch timing. Also, we must be in a state to release titles not just at launch, but continually afterwards. We are planning for it to be a platform that will be played for a long time.” What’s more, the console will be profitable from launch, and won’t be a loss leader the way the Wii U was.

If what Kimishima says is true, then Nintendo may not be in such trouble after all. If the system really does have a strong launch lineup, and a strong ramp-up after that, along with a respectable amount of third-party support, Nintendo may still be able to make the Nintendo NX into a success. Let’s just hope that new hardware from Sony and Microsoft isn’t too compelling.

A weak launch lineup killed the Wii U. The console had just a few games at launch, and no major titles for the better part of a year thereafter. By the time enough titles were out to drive some real sales momentum, third parties had given up on the console, and a lot of consumers had too. The Wii U GamePad itself never really got as exciting as it could have been either. Nintendo didn’t push its own innovation as hard as it should have. And it all stemmed from the weak launch lineup.

If Nintendo NX can avoid that, the future could be entirely different—even if the system is weaker than the upgraded hardware Sony and Microsoft have been hinting at lately. Let’s hope the lineup is really as strong as Kimishima is saying.
