by Michael Rougeau via Digital Trends

It wasn’t on Sony’s official list of new features for the PlayStation 4’s version 4.50 update, but the console just got a new “boost mode,” along with other additions. The PS4 boost mode is designed to help older games run better on the newest and most powerful PS4 hardware, the PS4 Pro.

Users who have access to the 4.50 beta and a PS4 Pro can check the new feature out in their console’s settings menu under the new “boost mode,” which has been confirmed. A Sony spokesperson provided a statement on its function to The Verge.

Boost mode “lets PS4 Pro run at a higher GPU and CPU clock speed in order to improve gameplay on some PS4 games that were released before the launch of PS4 Pro … Games that have a variable frame rate may benefit from a higher frame rate, and load times may be shorter in some games too,” Sony explained.

The boost mode isn’t perfect. Apparently, it can cause some “unexpected behavior,” and it won’t affect all old PS4 games equally (or at all). Meanwhile users are congregating on sites like neoGAF to test the feature out. One early YouTube video claimed Just Cause 3, an open world action game released in 2015, benefits so much from boost mode that it “seems like a whole new game.”

The 4.50 update also includes support for external hard drives, custom home screen backgrounds, the option to manually post to the PlayStation Network activity feed, 3D movie support in PlayStation VR, and improvements to the quick menu accessed by holding the PlayStation button on the PS4 controller. The update is available now to users signed up for the PS4 beta program (which is closed to new users unfortunately), and will roll out to all PS4 users at a later date.

Rockstar’s Red Dead Revolver has been re-released on PlayStation 4 and is available to download now through the PlayStation Store. The game is priced $14.99 and features “full 1080p up-rendered” visuals.

On top of the upgraded graphics, the PS4 version supports features such “Trophies, Shareplay, Remote Play, Activity Feeds and Second Screen support for game manuals with PS Vita or PS App.”

Red Dead Revolver was originally released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2004. It started life as a Capcom title, but Rockstar purchased the rights when it acquired Angel Studios, the team that would go on to become Rockstar San Diego.

A follow-up, the highly acclaimed Red Dead Redemption, was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2010. It is not playable on PlayStation 4 but was added to list of titles supported by Xbox One backwards compatibility in July.

In May, Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, said it will announce new games “soon,” but that none of these will be out until April 2017 at the very earliest.

Although Red Dead Redemption 2 has not been announced in any official capacity, a map from a possible Red Dead Redemption 2 leak appeared online earlier this year. Take-Two also previously said the Red Dead franchise is considered a “permanent” one by Take-Two.

In GameSpot’s Red Dead Revolver review the game earned a 7.3: “Its heart is in the right place, but Red Dead Revolver tries to go in too many directions at once,” said Ryan Davis. “There are too many different playable characters and too many unique gameplay elements that just don’t gel. And though the story is well told, there’s just not enough focus on Red.

“If you can forgive Red Dead Revolver for its hubris, you’ll find a game with some great style and enough fun moments to justify the rough edges. It may not have what it takes to bring about a full-fledged Western revival in the world of video games, but it’s an honest try.”

by Bryan Clark via The Next Web

Nintendo plans to release its new system with a format many of us thought was dead — the cartridge.

Ultimately abandoned after the Nintendo 64, the cartridge was long feared dead until chip-based cartridges started garnering new attention. Flash memory can pack a ton of data onto a single cartridge, and with fierce competition among semiconductor makers like Samsung and Toshiba, the price is hoped to reach parity with the disc at some point in the near future. When this happens, the cartridge may become relevant again — or we could be playing on consoles that require us to download new titles and forego physical formats entirely.

For now though, we know that after months of rumors that the Nintendo NX may be cartridge-based — it is.

Those with small children — a huge portion of Nintendo’s fan-base — will appreciate the new format as grubby little child paws will no longer be all over your expensive discs. Nor will we find them in odd places, like the DVD player.

Cartridges also offer faster loading times, make games harder to copy and can be mass-produced faster than discs, according to industry insiders.

Metal_Gear_Solid_5.0.0

by Allegra Frank via Polygon

Konami will release a package containing both Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain on Oct. 11, the company confirmed on its website, following rumors earlier today that a set was forthcoming. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Experience will be available on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One and retail for $49.99.

The Metal Gear Solid 5 collection will also come with Metal Gear Online, The Phantom Pain’s multiplayer component, and all available downloadable content on one disc, according to Konami. That includes both missions for Ground Zeroes, all items for The Phantom Pain and the expansion packs for Metal Gear Online.

Konami has recently shown interest in keeping the Metal Gear franchise alive, despite creator Hideo Kojima splitting for his own studio late last year. The publisher announced Metal Gear Survive at Gamescom 2016; the co-op multiplayer shooter takes place just after Ground Zeroes and is due out sometime next year.

Sony has teamed up with the Humble Store to start offering PlayStation gamers the opportunity to get their hands on games for PlayStation devices for dirt cheap prices. The very first PlayStation Humble Bundle is jam packed with tons of games, giving gamers an absolutely massive stash of content for a low price.

VG 24/7 did a quick rundown of the bundle, listing off some of the notable games included, as well as the regions in which the bundle is made available.

The bundle centers around Capcom games and is offered in tiers. As of the writing of this article, more than 32,000 bundles have been sold so far. If you only pay $1 you’ll gain access to Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, a completely different game from DICE’s Battlefield series. The $1 bundle also includes the remade version of Strider for the PS3, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, the poorly received Final Fight Double Impact and a 45% off coupon for Street Fighter V for the PlayStation 4, which is actually a pretty darn good deal.

If you pay more than $12 you can unlock a collection of higher-tier games, including the critically lauded adventure game, Okami HD. Clover Studios’ really nailed it with that one before they eventually dissolved and turned into Platinum Games. The $12 bundle also includes Remember Me, Lost Planet 3, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10, along with Resident Evil HD for either the PS3 or the PS4.

That’s a heck of a lot of games for $12. In fact, those are the kind of deals we usually expect to be exclusive to Steam. Consoles finally moving in that space really opens them up for some potentially good bundles in the future.

However, the deals don’t stop there. If you pay $15 or more, you’ll not only get all of the aforementioned games but you’ll also get a 50% off coupon for Mega Man Legacy Collection for the PlayStation 4, along with the Devil May Cry HD Collectionfor the PS3 and Resident Evil 0 Remastered for either the PS3 or the PlayStation 4.

So for $15 you’re getting 15 games in total, including the games bundled into the combo and collection packs. That’s a really, really good deal. Most of these games would cost you hundreds of dollars if you tried to buy them separately outside of the bundle. If you’re just building a collection of PlayStation titles, this isn’t a bad way to go.

Heck, even if you don’t have a PlayStation 3, for $15 you’re still getting three PlayStation 4 games and two coupons to bring recognized games down in price by almost 50%.

Part of the Humble Bundle proceeds goes toward a number of charity organizations, including the American Red Cross and the Save The Children Foundation.

You can check out the Humble Bundle deal for the Capcom PlayStation games by heading on over to the Humble Bundle website.

by Tom Brant via PC Magazine

SteamVR, the tracking technology that powers the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, will soon be available to device manufacturers royalty-free.

The move is intended boost the number of VR peripherals and other input devices compatible with the Vive, SteamVR maker Valve said this week.

At this early stage in VR development, with just three mainstream high-end headsets—PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, in addition to the Vive—making it cheaper for third-party manufacturers to support the SteamVR platform could give Valve and HTC a competitive edge.

“It’s critical to the future of the virtual reality ecosystem to open up the tracking technology to support the growth of a healthy portfolio of products that work together with HTC Vive,” HTC Vice President Raymond Pao said in a statement. “This is an amazing way to compliment the HTC Vive and spur further innovation in VR.”

Third-party manufacturers still need to pay nearly $3,000 to attend a training course in order to use SteamVR tracking technology in their own devices. But the elimination of royalties and licensing fees will mean a significantly lower cash outlay for most.

To help increase adoption, HTC said it plans to hold training courses for manufacturers in Asia, in addition to the Valve-hosted courses in Seattle.

Each SteamVR licensee will get a hardware development kit including a reference tracking device, sensors, and software tools to help design and build new devices.

Efficient tracking technology is crucial to VR’s development, especially as a way to reduce headsets’ massive demands on CPUs. Companies like Nvidia are evaluating techniques to decrease the field of view that needs to be rendered by focusing on where the user’s eye is looking. That requires extremely responsive tracking.

sega-mini-genesis

by Jacob Siegal via BGR News

Not to be outdone by Nintendo’s reveal of the NES Classic Edition earlier this month, Sega and AtGames announced two new retro consoles this week with 80 games built in in celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary.

First up we have the Genesis Classic Game Console, a device which you’ve likely seen on store shelves in years past. AtGames has been at the forefront of the nostalgia-fueled retro console business for quite some time, so this is really just the 2016 edition of the Classic Game Console with a few new games included.

One of the most significant differences between AtGames’ mini Genesis and Nintendo’s mini NES is that the Genesis actually plays original Genesis cartridges. If you have any old Sega games lying around, you can slot them in and start playing. The Sega console also comes with two wireless controllers, but supports classic Genesis controllers as well (if you want to go really retro).

sega-genesis-portableUnfortunately, the mini Genesis doesn’t support HDMI output, but if you don’t want to play on your TV, you can pick up the Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player instead. This 3.2-inch handheld console features the same 80 games, but also has an SD card slot in case you want to add more.

Both the mini Genesis and the portable Genesis will be available in October for around $65. They might not be as polished as the NES Classic Edition, but if you prefer quantity over quality, they’re worth checking out.

e3-xbox-one-s

The next mini-generation of gaming consoles is officially on its way to our living rooms. Microsoft announced a launch date Monday for one of its Xbox One S models. The console, which packs a whopping 2 TB of storage, will be available in stores starting Aug. 2 for $400.

The $400 console is the most expensive of the three Xbox One S models that Microsoft unveiled last month. Deciding to announce the release of the most expensive model first is a little puzzling, particularly when press coverage of its $300 model was so extensive.  But perhaps demand for the $400 model was high enough — since it packs a lot of storage — that Microsoft wanted to release it first.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Xbox One S is the mid-generation upgrade of the nearly three-year-old Xbox One. It’s 40 percent smaller, 4K-capable and has a comparatively cheaper launch price than the Xbox One’s launch price. It’s also white instead of black.  When Microsoft first revealed the Xbox One S, it framed the decision to launch a refreshed console as a way to offer consumers more feature and pricing choices.

“Different people have different things that may appeal to them,” said Dave McCarthy, general manager of Xbox Services, in a June interview with The Post.

When it comes to the Xbox One S, those who’ve already bought a $500 Xbox One at launch probably won’t want to buy another console just yet. So the refreshed console should be the most appealing to those who still have an Xbox 360, and may not mind being a bit behind the times when Microsoft launches its next major update. (That would be “Project Scorpio,” which Microsoft has said will be coming in 2017.)

The Xbox One S also could be a good secondary console — if you have the money to spend on such a thing — or a good investment for those who really want the 4K quality and have the televisions to support it.

Microsoft has yet to announce the launch dates for the $300 model with 500 GB of storage and the $350 model with 1 TB  of storage. Based on past sales trends, however,  it would be logical for Microsoft to release them in time for back-to-school season, or at least before the holiday shopping season gets started.

“More details on the specific availability dates of these two options will be shared soon,” the company said in an official blog post.

Microsoft’s newest console is expected to have competition this holiday season. There is a new PlayStation in the works — currently code-named the “Neo” — but it is expected to be more expensive than the PlayStation 4. Sony has confirmed the Neo’s existence but has not released further details.

NEO

by Brad Jones via Digital Trends

UPDATE: (12:45 p.m. ET): Don’t get your hopes up for the October release of Sony’s PlayStation 4 “Neo.” The company has confirmed that Amazon Spain’s listing was an error: It was meant for the upcoming PlayStation VR, “but a poor choice of wording has led it to being misreported as Neo,” a spokesman said. The release date and price are consistent with PS VR; there are still no details on when the next-generation gaming console will arrive.

Brace yourself, Windows 7 and 8/8.1 users: a full-screen upgrade nag is coming. It seems that Microsoft is ending its year of offering Windows 10 for free with an impossible-to-ignore prompt, one that takes up the entire screen and doesn’t have an obvious close button.

Even on Windows 7, the full-screen notification resembles the “modern” apps seen in Windows 8 and 10, meaning it will immediately stand out. And with no obvious “close” button to be seen, users will have no choice but to do a little reading, TechReport is reporting.

At this point, there are likely three kinds of users who haven’t yet upgraded: those who want the upgrade but keep putting it off, those who aren’t sure what Windows 10 is, and those who actively don’t want to upgrade. If we had to guess, Microsoft is targeting the first group: those who keep putting the upgrade off.

“Sorry to interrupt,” the full-screen notification tells users, “but this is important. Windows 10 free upgrade offer ends July 29.”

It’s clear enough language, if you’ve been delaying. The upgrade won’t be free anymore, so get on this.

It’s also relatively clear language if you’re not sure what Windows 10 is, though we suspect some readers will still get calls from uncles and grandmothers about a Windows 10 virus taking over the entire screen.

But if you don’t want the upgrade, this is the latest in a long series of annoyances. Such users might note that, after nearly an entire year of related notifications, the ending of the free-upgrade period hardly constitutes news. And this particular prompt is even harder to ignore than previous ones.

At the very least, the end of these notes is coming. Microsoft has said that such prompts will stop after the July 29 deadline, giving relief to long-suffering users who have no intention to upgrade.

If you go ahead and install Windows 10, it’s possible to roll everything back. The upgrade process makes a complete backup of your original operating system, and keeps it there for thirty days, giving you an easy way to get back to where you started.

And even if you roll back the upgrade, you’ve reserved your free upgrade for later. So if you’re even a little bit curious about Windows 10, it might be a good idea to finally install. Come August doing so will cost you $110, so get it done before then.
