blackops3

Want to play through Treyarch’s gritty futuristic campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3? You’ll need an Xbox One, PS4 or PC. Less than two months out of release, Activision has announced that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game won’t be getting a campaign mode, though they will still be getting zombies and multiplayer. The older machines just can’t take the heat, the company says.

“The ambitious scope of the 1-4 player [co-op] Campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware,” Activision said in a blog post. “Delivering the best possible gameplay experience on all platforms is always our highest priority.”

As a result, Activision is dropping the price down to $49.99 for last-gen versions, meaning that it’s effectively pricing the campaign mode at $10. To be fair, most people don’t even play the campaign, and fewer still finish it. Still, it’s a fundamental piece of the experience with each new releases, if only because it serves to ground the multiplayer and give each game something that approximates a distinct flavor. The $10 price drop just doesn’t quite feel like enough — maybe $20 would do it.

Actually, a multiplayer-only version of Call of Duty for $40 would probably something a lot of gamers would be interested in, whether they’re playing on current or last-gen. And that’s also, probably, why we’ll never get it. The decision to ditch the campaign raises the question of whether or not Activision will bother at all with last-gen next year: Call of Duty needs massive install bases to make its numbers, but at a certain point, you’ve just got to pull the plug.

I’m one of those rare players that looks forward to Call of Duty every year, but really only for the campaign. The last two outings haven’t been great, but when this series gets it right it has a control over pacing that only Naughty Dog can exceed. Expect more as we get closer to release.

At E3 Bungie announced The Taken King expansion for Destiny, and as we explained this morning that didn’t go over very well with existing players. One of the main reasons is that, aside from a $40 price for the expansion itself, Bungie made exclusive downloadables that only people buying the complete game as part of a new collector’s edition could get. Tonight the developer published an early “Part 1” of its usual weekly update, apologizing for that awkward Eurogamer interview and explaining that existing players can get the new items (three specific class emotes, three color schemes for their armor, and three exotic class items) by shelling out $20 for an upgrade bundle it will put on sale September 15th. That’s certainly better than not being able to get it at all — and cheaper than buying the new $80 CE — but let us know if that’s enough, or if you’re still calling BS.

During their E3 press conference on Monday, Microsoft executives announced backward compatibility for Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One. Just a few days later, they’ve opened a page to allow fans to vote on what games they want added to the program.

Leading the pack, with more than 30,000 votes, is open-world western Red Dead Redemption.

While only 18 games are available right now including fan favorites Viva Piñata, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 and the original Mass Effect, Microsoft has promised 100 titles by this holiday season.

Other titles topping the charts in the fan vote include every single shooter of the previous generation. Also Fallout 3 and BioShock Infinite… which have a bunch of shooting in them as well. More than likely, Microsoft is eager to spread the love around to other genres, so now’s your chance to place a vote that just might make a difference in what titles you’re able to play.

c7a12fbe-af04-4a90-92f2-18338219c2aa by Aaron Souppouris Even though the Xbox One controller has earned many plaudits, one thing universally hated is the lack of a headphone port. So far the best solution has been to buy the $24.99 Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter, but even that’s not without its problems. Although it won’t be much consolation to gamers that already bought the adapter, Microsoft is going to release a refreshed controller this June with a 3.5mm port built in. The news comes via Microsoft’s own support site, which says the port (number 16 on the diagram above) will feature on “controllers released after June 2015.” It also notes that only “compatible” 3.5mm audio devices can be connected to this port. Chances are you’ll be able to hear audio through any headphones, but there will be some headset mics that won’t work due to the pointlessly different way manufacturers order the conductors on their jacks. The PlayStation 4, and many phones, suffer from the same issue, so that’s not really something Microsoft can control.

Multiplayer first-person shooter WWI game Verdun officially launched today on Steam, according to Dutch developers M2H Games and Blackmill Games.

The PC, Linux and Mac game was in Early Access on Steam for more than a year where it earned about 4,300 positive reviews out of nearly 5,000.

The game features authentic weapons and uniforms from WWI and includes maps from some of the battles that took place between 1914 and 1918 in France and Belgium, according to the developers.

Other features include “true trench warfare,” tactical squad combat and a variety of multiplayer modes.

Today’s full release of the game includes a bonus map called Aisne, based on an area in Northern France which saw some of the biggest battles during the early years of the war.

The developers promise that Verdun will get free thematic expansions over time, including the addition of Belgian and American troops for the Allies, and for the Central Powers some special German troops.

Rockstar Games has launched a new update for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions of open-world game Grand Theft Auto V that fixes the graphical problems that sprung up from an earlier patch.

In addition to clearing out those bugs, which resulted in a deterioration in overall graphical quality, the patch fixes a couple of other visual-focused errors. The three fixes included with the patch are listed below, courtesy of the Rockstar support site.
Fixes graphical issues on PS4 and Xbox One introduced after Title Update 1.08.
Corrects an issue where some players’ character appearances would change periodically
Fixes an animation issue where another player aiming on your screen would not play the correct animation

The graphical issues were limited to the Xbox One and PS4 editions of the game.

In other news about GTA V, the PC edition of the crime game is now available to pre-load from Steam and the Rockstar Warehouse. That version of the game launches one week from today, on April 14, and will include online Heists right away.

Halo5Guardians-ChiefLocke

by Dave Thier

Halo 5 will be released on October 27th, Microsoft and 343 industries announced today with a new live action TV ad.

The trailer features newcomer Locke exploring some sort of smoldering ruins in the shadow of a giant monument to Master Chief, apparently canonized for his regular universe saving. But all is not well! The real Master Chief is lying wounded at the base of the statue, and Locke seems to feel that he’s done something to deserve lying there. Master Chief is a traitor, apparently, responsible for the aforementioned ruins. My guess is that’s the end of the story: cut and dry, no surprise twists of any kind. That guy always seemed shifty, anyway. I like the notion of a story a little more rooted in human politics: the endlessly absurd mythology that attempted to drive the story in Halo 4 was getting a little tiresome.

Halo 5 is by far the most powerful Microsoft and the Xbox One has in their arsenal, so it will be interesting to see what happens with the console war come October. It was originally slated to go up against Sony’s powerhouse Uncharted 4, but that’s been delayed until the spring. The PS4 continues to dominate the Xbox One internationally, but a strong exclusive lineup never hurts a console — with Halo coming out in October, I imagine we’ll be seeing Rise of The Tomb Raider in November.

We first saw Halo 5 two E3s ago, with a trailer featuring Master chief hiking through a snowy landscape, clutching a rag to provide some heat beyond his Mjolnir Assault Armor. What was he after out there? Did it have something to do with his theoretical betrayal? Let’s just hope that the multiplayer component works a little bit better than the Master Chief Collection when release day rolls around.

We’ll have more on this much anticipated entry in the Call of Duty series as this story develops. But, until then, check out their “captured” tweet below.
